WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MONEY IN OUR LIVES

PAPER 2: WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MONEY IN OUR LIVES?
AUDIENCE: Your audience is your class—in other words, your peers and your instructor. As
you write, keep us, your (potential) readers, in mind. Your audience might also be the author
and the same audience of the article you’re writing in response to in this paper. Although those
people might never actually read your paper, remember that you’re joining in this “ongoing
conversation.”
PURPOSE: In paper 2, you will respond to your chosen article by discussing whether you
agree, disagree, or both agree and disagree with the author and why. In other words, you’re
writing an argument. If you think about it, by agreeing with the author, you’re essentially arguing
that the author is right. If you’re disagreeing, you’re arguing that the author is wrong. To
strengthen your argument, paper 2 will include a counterargument (naysayers).
LENGTH: Minimum of 1500 words
SOURCES: For paper 2, you must find a minimum of TWO credible and appropriate sources.
However, they do not have to be scholarly sources.
• Be sure to cite your sources within your paper (following MLA format).
• Be sure to provide a Works Cited page with full bibliographic information (following MLA
format) of the sources used, including the article you’re writing in response to.
STEPS: Paper 2 is comprised of the following steps.
• Outline (due October 20)
• Works Cited page (due October 20)
• Draft (due October 27)
• Revision, if needed (no later than December 1)
CRITERIA: To earn a grade of Complete for Paper 2, you must meet these minimum
requirements.
• A typed outline that follows all directions and criteria
• A typed works cited page that follows all directions and criteria
• A typed draft (including a works cited page) in MLA format that follows all directions and
criteria
• A revision, if needed, that follows all directions and criteria
• Either a draft or revision that earns a Meets Proficiency based on the rubric for paper 2

any and all parts of the portfolio will impact the course grade. Please check the syllabus for
specific information on portfolio late days and the course grade.
RUBRIC: Please see the following page. The sections highlighted in yellow are parts of the
rubric that are different from the rubric for paper 1.
