Based on the textbook readings, explain the differences between strategic and neighborhood-oriented policing. What are the significant advantages and disadvantages of each with regard to the law enforcement administrator’s perspective?

  Strategic oriented policing is an important part of community policing.  It has had several other names such as broken windows policing and zero tolerance policing.  Strategic oriented policing is where community policing begins and it allows for a better transition from traditional policing.  Strategic oriented policing looks for opportunities in the community, as an example, a run down building that is vacant and in poor repair.  They focus their attention on policing this area, eliminating the hazard and thus eliminating the criminal element.  This is done with a partnership with the community and advising them on what they need to do in the process of making their community safer  (Oliver, 2008).

  Neighborhood oriented policing is another part of community oriented policing and is considered by some to be the core concept.  This concept is tasked with bringing the community and the police department together.  Neighborhood oriented policing deals with the specific programs that bring the police department into the community.  This could be the patrols, which type and how many to developing programs to involve the department with the community  (Oliver, 2008).  Neighborhood oriented policing is sometimes mislabeled as community policing because of the nature of it’s tasks.

  From an administrator’s point of view, the advantages of the strategic oriented policing is that you gain buy in or ownership from the community on improving their neighborhoods.  There are only so many officers that can be staffed and so many patrols so the community members must take some ownership of the process.  With pinpoint focus, they department and community can focus on an area or problem site and work together to eliminate the issue, which in turn reduces crime.  That is what administrators want from their police department.

  The advantages from the neighborhood oriented policing strategy are that your department’s public relations rating is usually strong and positive.  It also aligns the citizens and the department on the same team to fight crime and put confidence back in the community.  The more the department is immersed in the community, the easier communication flows and partnerships develop that can benefit both sides.
