You may or may not wonder where I’ve been… Right, that’s it, causing trouble! My dad and I moved to new accommodations, and my sister and I didn’t try to kill each other until AFTER we got there.

Anyway, I’m still writing. I have a zillion ideas going around in my head. The one I work on changes daily. Today it is about a young lawyer in the U.S., college/uni graduate and just out of law school, who is faced with a crisis of conscience. At this point, I am not thinking of genre. I am just struggling to outline it. I know, progress comes in small steps.

Coincidentally, the new lawyer who faces that crisis of confidence is male and will be written against type in every way possible. I may even invent some new stereotypes for this main character to turn inside out. Any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

I’m intrigued by your comment that you may “invent some new stereotypes for this main character,” Debby. Isn’t a stereotype based on a widely held belief that’s a little too simple and is applied to a group eg: all bankers are rich, all girls like dolls, all lawyers are greedy? I’m not sure how inventing a stereotype could work as it seems an oxymoron. I’m wary of characters who are based on stereotypes (or their direct opposite) as, to me, they’re a little too cliched – the bad lawyer turned good. I prefer books with characters who don’t perpetuate misconceptions and are just fully rounded, interesting individuals, so it’s great you’re planning on “writing against type.” What about some interesting character flaw/quirk to bring your young lawyer to life or a hidden ambition (he longs to open a pickled onion museum or mass produce jumpers from knitted dog hair) or a difficult situation (his brother, who funded law school, is a local crime boss and is using his brother’s identity to bigamously marry the president.) I love the quirkiness of the main character in Better Call Saul. He’s far removed from the idea of what/who a lawyer is or should be. It’d be worth speaking to some young lawyers too. As an older lawyer, I find stereotypes (around professions, races, genders, backgrounds etc) incredibly irritating and going against type can sometimes only emphasise misconceptions (a mirror image). Good luck!
