Help with naming my genre
Posted by Vanessa Williams on 19 February 2024 at 16:47How do I identify what genre I am writing in? If Lorna Sage’s Bad Blood were fiction, that would be the closest match. Other writers I feel similar to are Sue Gee, Nicci Gerrard, Shena Mackay, Janet Fitch. I would love some help please. Thanks.

Vanessa,
Perhaps if you tell us a little more about your book?

Hi Vanessa,
The genre of a book isn’t defined by the style it is written in, but by the type of story. Therefore it doesn’t matter how many writers you compare yourself to, in order to know the genre of your book we need to know what it is about.

Hi Vanessa, I’m going with Family Saga: a genre of literature which chronicles the lived experiences of a family, or interconnected families over a period of time. In fiction this is often a thematic device used to portray particular historical events, changes of social circumstances, or the ebb and flow of fortunes from multiple perspectives.

By the way, Jericho Wall Betas is an excellent place to find readers for your novel. You might find Beta readers amongst the writers of: Historical, Womens’ or General Fiction. We’ve got about 40 members writing in those genres. JWB is a private group, so you have to apply to join, but you’d be most welcome.

Thanks, everyone. Natalia – I wasn’t clear: it’s the type of stories that the authors I mentioned write that I was focussing on : the subjects they write about and the approach they take that I was highlighting. – I realise people might not have read these novels so it is difficult. This is the slightly longer elevator pitch, William, that I posted in week 1: “Rosie and Miranda meet as children and remain friends over the years, meeting less frequently as their lives diverge. When Rosie disappears, Miranda begins to realise how little she knew of her life and must follow the threads back to find what has happened to her.” I had considered Jericho Wall Betas, thank you Rod. Not sure it’s family sagas and it’s not ‘women’s fiction’ though not really confident of that as a category..) . Thanks everyone
